Firu’s Dream As Told to Dr. Buruiana
It was a hot summer afternoon and there was no one left in the building. In the backyard, tucked away from the street noise, the dog was playing with the water stream dripping from the well. Mihai, its owner, was sleeping belly-up in the shade of the cherry tree… An empty water bottle was laying at his feet. All of a sudden, Mihai started to wheeze more and more, feeling sick. The dog got agitated and started barking. At that point, one of Mihai’s friends – some hobo known as «The Shaved-Headed Man» – appeared out of nowhere. Hearing Mihai hovering, he tried to go inside the backyard, but the gate was locked. He rang all the door bells, no answer. He started crying out for help, still no answer. Not realizing the danger, Firu refused to open the gate for The Shaved-Headed Man and kept hiding in the dark, behind the window blinds. Mihai eventually died, while The Shaved-Headed Man helplessly watched. Although he tried countless times to enter the backyard, he failed saving his friend.
As soon as he understood his cowardice, Firu couldn’t bring himself to leave the apartment. Nevertheless, The Shave-Headed Man caught a glimpse of Firu hiding behind the blinds. He started yelling at him, but in vain. Firu was dying with shame. When the others arrived: Corina – Firu’s friend, Mr. Calomfirescu – his neighbor, and the rescue team, The Shaved-Headed Man tried to convince them that Firu was inside the apartment, but they didn’t believe him. Reaching a catatonic state, Firu eventually asked his mother for help, who managed to get him out of the apartment, with the help of the police. The Shaved-Headed Man was taken into custody for his misfit behavior and for «disturbing the peace».
